Architecture Project

The final project was a study of architecture and Illustrator. The goal was to take an original structure and then, in Illustrator, copy its line, shape, and value using many tools, mainly the pen tool, to make an accurate representation of the structure. This project was, what I thought to be, the most time consuming and difficult, as it required looking at every minute detail of not just the building itself, but also the scenery around the structure as to get an accurate design. Along with the drawing itself, we also had to write up a page to go along with image describing the details of the building as well as why we chose it.

Type Portrait Project

The type portrait project saw the use of text in Illustrator to show the Shape, Line, and Value of one or more images. I chose to use the same image for all three portraits as to show the changes in design methods as applied to the same picture. The Shape portrait uses individual letters and ASCII characters to make the design of the picture. For this portrait, the hardest part was trying to find the right letters to make out the Black Lantern ring on my finger. The Line portrait was the second one, and for that I used the Green Lantern oath as the text being repeated over and over throughout the linear design, except on my ring where I fittingly used the Black Lantern oath. The most complex portrait was the Value one, using mass levels of text modified in kerning, size, and type to show the original image's value. For the text here I used the oaths of all the Corps that have one; Red, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet, and the Black Lanterns.

Logo Project

As an opening disclaimer on this segment, I do not have the originals of the pieces of this, nor the finished ones to scan in, so this will be written under the logo itself.

The logo project required using Adobe Illustrator to make a logo for a locally owned dogfood company, Barefoot Biscuit Co., LLC. The logo needed to be easily recognizable and relevant to the product, so I put the words of the title inside of dog biscuites shaped like bones, and made a cartoon styled dog smiling with a large grin to act as a finishing piece to the logo as well as to be a type of recognizable company mascot. The project also entailed making stationary, a business card, a CMYK/RGB breakdown, a page showing both colored as well as black and white versions of the logo, and an envelope, all of which would be used to professionally present the logo idea to the company.

Website Interface

The website project was equal parts a photoshop experiment as well as a study in proper, organized, design of a specific media. We were to make an improved design on a generally lacking website about selling hand-made, authentic Cherokee jewelry. The hardest task of this prooject was to find a nice, compact, functional design structure that not only gave the feel of being Cherokee, but also of being a storefront and informational spot.

Dreamscape Project

The next project was to design a dreamscape using a group of images added to a base theme. The original image I chose to use was an HD shot of the Golden Gate Bridge. For the dreamscape element I chose to use a theme of The Blackest Night, where Black Lantern rings attach to the deceased and turn them into emotion-feeding undead. The basis of the image was to use the start of the event, having clouds darken the world, and a giant Black Lantern moon spew the rings across the world. The word 'flesh' can be seen as the rings call as they hunt for bodies, and the word 'rise' glows in front of the embodiment of death, Nekron. This project uses many detailed features of Photoshop, such as masks, opacity levels, blurs, hue changes, and many others.

Magazine Cover Project

Our first big project was to create a magazine cover. For my cover I decided to make it a magazine about comic books. The primary image is that of each color Lantern Corpsman raising a fist to the sky, shooting a colored beam of light into the blackest night. I also added a picture of the character Parallax to emphasize an internal secondary story. The nameplate uses a Batman-esque font to complement the subject matter, and all colors and fonts added are to portray a fluidity of design to cut down clashing elements of the piece.
